What Are The Basics Of Making A Residential Move?

Moving to a new home is major life change and an “inconvenient” one at that.  By knowing some tricks of the real estate trade, moving doesn’t have to be a major life hassle.  It can be an exciting transition.  I’ve gathered these time saving tips to help make your move run a little smoother and quicker for you:

1.  Before you leave the old home, take care of personal items such as: having your teeth cleaned, going to the doctor, filling prescriptions, getting hair cuts, and taking the dog to the vet.  Be sure to request a new directory of approved physicians in your new area.

2.  Pack a survival box including: coffee pot, toilet paper, snacks, essential dishes, hardware tools, towels, bedding, first aid items, pet supplies (food, bowl, leashes), diapers, cleaning supplies, telephone and a utility knife to open boxes. 

3.  Pack items in boxes by designated rooms.  Mark the contents of each box and which room it goes in. Use over-sized labels that the movers can easily find and read.

4.  Hook up the refrigerator and freezer first.  You want to make sure they work before you get back from your first shopping trip.  The dirty clothes will follow close behind, so hook up the washer and dryer.

5.  Start with the kitchen first.  It is the central command center for the whole house. Of course, the bedroom follows closely behind when you pass out from exhaustion.

6.  Leave clothing in drawers during your move.  When using professional movers, this saves the costs of extra boxes and packing.

7.   I recommend that you promptly have all the locks re-keyed or changed.  Even if it is a new home, it is possible that some of the contractors still have your keys! 

8.  Check to make sure that all the windows are locked.

9.  Call a security company and have them connect your home to their central monitoring system.
